I was just talking about this with someone else and have found some major flaws in the way designers are critiqued at this forum. I find that there is not much separation and the current scale is not what should be used. Looking at some members which have been classified, I find that although they are of clearly different design levels, they have the same classification.Furthermore, I find that the current system of A to E isn't being used correctly. Like school, C is average, A is best and E is fail. The problem is that nothing is a failure, in which case A to E should be like a rank from 1 to 10 (which would be more suitable). Even better would be Amateur, Novice, etc. I hope these things are looked at. |

E? Do you mean F? We were debating whether or not to have C-, C+, B-, B+, etc. I suppose we could add those new variables to balance it out a little more. |

Those are still all the same. Anything bellow a C- become a failure and nothing is a failure! |

We don't grade below a C or C-, it's the lowest you can get. |

So why not extend it to allow for better separation. |

We definitely could, but I'd say that something like a D would put someone's work down rather than telling them the quality. C- seems like a nicer way to put it. |

Hi.
|
So you're saying a system based from 1-10, 5 being average, 1 being failure, should be used? |

No. There is no failure! That is what I am trying to say. Use this: Amateur, Novice, Adept, Skillful, Master, etc. |

By not using the F, we don't suggest that there is failure. We're basically using what you suggest, but in a different way. The C to A system is unique and it fits with our theme of a 'school' area. However, it can definitely be changed if many others agree with you that they would like your names better.

I do not think you understand entirely. The problem is the A to C does not separate the members enought. What I propose it a 10 rank system, each rank with a name as I said before or different names. Having this greater separation allows for members to be classified better because while some members may be close to A they ar not there. This is why the 10 ranks is better. EVERYONE SUPPORT ME! |

If they're close to A, but not entirely there, then that's where a B+ or A- would come in. A+ A A- B+ B B- C+ C C- That's nine ranks, you could translate in to words if you really needed to such as: C- ; Amateur C ; Novice C+ ; Adept Etc. |

Well they'd have some name. What I'm trying to get at is that the C to A system is the same as what you're thinking about, just with some different names. At the moment we haven't added C-, C+ and B-, B+ but since you've brought this up we will add those.

Also, I was thinking why not keep the ranks for ever until the designer wished to be classified again if he/she believes that they have improved. |

Then we'd have lots of people with ranks they don't really deserve anymore. I consider a designer someone who at least periodically produces graphics. It also helps people keep their skills sharper. Most people get worse if they go a long time with out designing, so why should they keep a grade they can't match up to anymore? That's just the way I feel. |
