NEW YORK — The spread of Internet use in Asia and the proliferation of Internet-connected phones worldwide are causing the Internet to run out of numerical addresses, which act as "phone numbers" to ensure that surfers reach websites and e-mails find their destination.

The top-level authority that governs such addresses will distribute the last batches on Thursday, two people with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press. They spoke on condition of anonymity because a formal announcement wasn't planned until Thursday.

Yeah, we're running out of IPv4 addresses.

However, when IPv6 protocols are adapted there will be a LOT more, so I wouldn't worry about this. ;)

May IPv4 die in a fire. It was flawed from the beginning. :P

IPv4 uses 32-bit addresses (4 billion, or 4.3×10^9, addresses) while IPv6 uses 128-bit addresses (340 undecillion, or 3.4×10^38 addresses)

IPv4 e.g.:
192.0.2.235

IPv6 e.g.:
2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334

So our IPs will get longer?
Consider this statement my permission to convert my themes to other platforms. Please link back to http://geoffreykoester.com. Be sure to rehost all theme images on the new platform as we do not know how long they will redirect. Also some boards hosting theme/skin images may not survive the move.

Correct. IPv4 addresses are 4 bits, while IPv6 addresses are 16 bits... so, err, 4 times the size, right?

Four? No, a lot more than four.

IPv4 allows 232 addresses. IPv6 allows 2128 address.

So 79,228,162,514,264,337,593,543,950,336 times the size.

Anyways, old topic, but the projected run-out date is August 2011. Of course, the projected date a few years ago was June 2012, so we'll see how things turn out.

i wonder how the addresses are running out.....
so they assign an address when a person buys a domain?
why don they just delete the inactive addresses to save more room?
