Identity Theft

In the morning around 3:00 am (GMT -8) my moms car was broken into and her wallet (no money in it) was taken. The wallet had all of our social securities and medical cards. We've called the police and they made a report just two hours after the event took place. The car is in another city because my step-dad has work so nothing could be done about that momentarily. The crook is the least of our families concern, but our identity theft is the problem. My mom called Identity Theft and reported it. She asked if they were going to switch or numbers, not ask but said and they said no. If numbers are not switched and stay the same then what the hell are they doing? Not their job it appears to me. They said they would keep tabs if anything is purchased or if our credit is used from the time the event happened and until they say we can use our number still. Even in the future he/she has our identities and can use them anywhere any place. Who's to say he/she bought that, did that or us. The only way I see out of this is new numbers.

Any help? :(

Contact a lawyer familiarized with identity theft cases and constitutional law, he will be able to point you in the right direction.

This seems like your best bet. Identity theft can hurt you for years and years; you need to research any and all options you have.

Good luck, I hope everything works out.

In this world you can be oh so smart or oh so pleasant. Well for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant.

Hi.
My mom is the neighborhood watch captain for my area - I've heard about quite a few cases like that (locally). Usually they'll do a SMALL payment to see if the credit card still works, and then you'll see a bunch of larger ($1,000+) charges..

I believe so, though I'm not sure.. it may be only if you win the case. :P

Lawyers generally charge a per hour charge, at least the ones I've met do. But I'm rather certain that legal fees would be better than stolen identities.

It depends on the area of expertise the lawyer has, and also if they have a reputation or not, some will ask to be payed a part in advance, however, if you win and the judge determines that the authorities had no right to deny you a change of numeration he will force them to pay your legal fees.

I am glad I have not had this happen to me and well I wouldn't know how to react either. I have to make sure for my own peace of mind when I am out that everything I took with me is still in my pockets so I have not had anything stolen yet and I hope not especially with my phone and well that was £510 and luckily it is insured just in case.

But you would all agree with me on the behalf of the numbers being changed and not kept the same right?

I'll look into the lawyer thing.

I do agree with you but it all depends on your state's legislature. Good luck solving this man.
