What's the McRib made of, anyway?

McDonalds' McRib and its cult-like following are back. Thank goodness the "disconcerting" sandwich is only returning for a limited time only, says Meredith Melnick at TIME. Because if you knew about all the unpronounceable ingredients packed into the McRib, you might think twice about wolfing down the sauce-drenched pork concoction. Think you can stomach what's inside? Read on:

How many ingredients are there?
At face value, the sandwich contains just pork, onions, and pickle slices slathered in barbecue sauce and laid out on a bun. But the truth is, there are roughly 70 ingredients. The bun alone contains 34, says TIME's Melnick. In addition to chemicals like ammonium sulfate and polysorbate 80, the most egregious may be azodicarbonamide — "a flour-bleaching agent most commonly used in the manufactur[ing] of foamed plastics like gym mats the and soles of shoes." According to McDonald's own ingredient list, the bun also includes calcium sulfate and ethoxylated mono- and diglycerides, among other chemicals.

I think I pass on the mc left over pig parts which is pretty much what that is plus a bunch of chemicals. How exactly is that classed as food?

i'm assuming the two people above grow their own vegetables and use their own pigs & cows as food, or at the very least read the labels of everything you eat?

probably not, but it's McDonald's so there's a bandwagon. i'm sure the health & food standards McDonald's have to abide by make sure what is in their food is quite all right, plus i don't remember McDonald's ever claiming to be organic healthy food

you don't have to eat there if you don't want to of course, but there's not much point thinking you're somehow better for not doing so

This.

It's pretty common knowledge McDonald's is no good for you. Unfortunately I eat it kind of often just because I can't afford much else than a two dollar burger in between pay checks. I'm just gonna say ignorance is bliss and hope that I earn enough money to where I don't need to eat McDonald's before I find out what exactly goes into my food,

I know Mcdonald's is terrible for you simply because my stomach has made it clear it wants no part of what they are offering as I get sick when I eat there so I figured I might as well not bother. Besides, it's incredibly salty and just dries you out which just adds to the list of reasons why I don't bother myself with McDonalds. It has nothing to do with getting on some bandwagon as some in this world can actually form opinions on their own. There is no way to grow anything around here as we have tried in the past plus the air and water aren't exactly clean either. George Carlin would actually ask people how their water was when he would go on tour and could not find one person who thought it didn't suck.

everything is bad for you if you have too much of it. McDonald's food isn't going to make you triple in size after eating there once a month or something. and i'm no medical expert but if you're getting sick from eating at McDonald's then i'd take a gamble it isn't their food specifically causing it, unless you've had a doctor verify it and in which case why aren't you reporting it? that isn't normal

i'm not sure about anywhere else but in England, anything quite unhealthy comes with "To be enjoyed as part of a healthy and balanced lifestyle." or similar on the label which includes fast food

Assuming is a dangerous thing to do, and in this case you're completely wrong. I don't pay attention to labels at all.

The reason I don't like their food is because it's shitty. It has nothing to do with being unhealthy, as I eat other fast food. But their food is just crap. Compared to the burgers many other places have, it's crap. Maybe it's good if that's the only place you eat at, but when you've eaten burgers from many different places, it just does not taste good (unless you have no taste buds or are content with the mediocre).

Has nothing to do with a bandwagon, has to do from eating there and comparing their food with food of other places. I wouldn't say their food is crap unless I tried/compared it with food of other places.

LOL, thanks, that's my point. you're quite happy to say McDonald's food is garbage when replying to an article about what's in their food, but don't pay attention to food labels to make sure there's not similar chemicals in there, so maybe you're jumping on a bandwagon without realising? don't forget you were replying to a post about the ingredients

if you don't like the food that's fair enough, an opinion is an opinion, but when you think that makes you somehow better than people who do eat there... yeah, it doesn't

I've always wanted to try a McRib! :( They actually sound disgusting but ribs are nice so it could prove me wrong (I highly doubt it though).

I'd recommend sticking to homemade ribs at this point. :D

Reach for the stars.
Over here in Belgium we have these fast food places too. They're like McDonalds although all the places are called differently. Well, only Dutch speaking people will understand the term 'frietkot'. They basically sell fries, burgers, and many things they sell at McDonalds too. We have like ... five of these in my town only.
It's weird to me that all I hear about McDonalds is bad but yet I hear nothing about these fast food places we have here. It's common and many many people go there and not many people have something against them. Not like they have against McDonalds...

Anyways, I don't quite care what's in my food. As long as I like the taste of it.
