Yes, this teacher most definitely needs to be fired. That's not really excusable of any person to do, especially to someone in elementary school who doesn't really know how to act otherwise. |

I hope he's fired. That's just plain wrong and uncalled for. |

Is this one incident so terrible that he should get fired? I mean reprimanded yes even a suspension but a outright firing is a bit much as it's not like anyone was molested or beaten here. If this was one student doing it to another then it would get them detention or a suspension but you won't see a kid get expelled for it nor would you see anyone demand it of the school. One thing that makes me wonder, why did the child sit there and allow this teacher to write stupid on their forehead backwards? Sounds rather stupid of him to sit there and take it as it obviously doesn't look like any official punishment of this school so why take it? |

Why does a kid have to be beaten or molested in order for the teacher to be fired? Seems like teachers should be held (and in most places are) to a certain code of conduct, where this and beating are both against it. You break it, you're out. I don't think someone that even does something like this once should be allowed back around that specific kid or others in his class. |

I don't think a firing would be necessary. Maybe a suspension, but not a firing. There's many other more dangerous things that would be a definite firing, but this would just not be in that category. |

You may think there are more serious things that the teacher could have done, but think about if this would have happened to you where you were the student. I know I would want that teacher losing his job if I was that student, and imagine how the kid's parents are reacting. I'm sure the school has a lot of pressure on them already to terminate this teacher, and rightfully so in my mind. |

I don't wish this teacher's termination because you make not only him suffer but his family as well. Yeah he was in the wrong but why punish others who are caught in the crossfire for what can only be considered a really bad judgement call until a pattern can be established. I like to know why these parents did not teach their child to not take such crap from people? When would anyone even consider this teacher's actions normal and not something to stand up to? I personally would not allow him to do any of this to me if I were in their shoes. There is a lesson to be learned in standing up for yourself and this child clearly wasn't taught this lesson. |

That reason for not firing him can be said about any firing anywhere. Why fire a guy from a factory because he has a family? Why fire anyone if they have a family? No one would ever be fired if that was the philosophy and you can hopefully see why it doesn't work. He screwed up, he should face the consequences. I'm sorry for his family, but it's the teacher's own fault, not anyone else's, for whatever happens to him. Regardless of whether or not the parents taught the kid anything at all, the teacher's actions are inexcusable and his punishment (so to speak) should not vary based on what the parents have or have not done. |

I suppose a lot of it does come down to context and the student's experience. I'd actually like to know what the student and other students felt about this. But as GAK said, teachers are held to a certain 'code of conduct'. Out of pure professionalism if nothing else, they can't really insult students on that kind of level. It's one thing to throw out a little "You're stupid" joke and everyone knows it's a joke, then it's the next step to go up and pretend to start writing it on their forehead, and finally it's a whole new thing to actually go all the way and do it (backwards at that). A child doing that to another child wouldn't be punished as badly for the same reason a child/teenager gets a lesser punishment for vandalism than an adult: their/our brains aren't considered to be as fully developed as adults and therefore not as capable of thinking things all the way through. I also wondered why the child would sit there and take it, and I came to a conclusion that it must have been a young child. The report said it was in an elementary school of grades kindergarten to eighth, so I assume it's a younger child who didn't know much better than to sit there. So I take back my earlier comment that the teacher should "most definitely" be fired simply because I'm not aware enough of all of the circumstances to make that judgement. |

It's possible that the child didn't know what he was writing, or what he was doing, since you can't see your own forehead. I could sort of understand/imagine a teacher making some sort of teaching example out of a forehead, and the kid could have thought the same at first and let it happen. |

The situation here isn't serious enough where there is no alternatives for punishment. Also, there is no pattern defined so it could be the end of it once the negative consequences are dealt out to this teacher. The whole " fire everyone who does something wrong" crowd is much like the " put everyone in jail who does something wrong" crowd. Not all moments of lawbreaking require jail time much like not all idiotic decisions made such as this one need a firing to get the message across that it's wrong. I don't have any qualms of having people fired when it's clear there is a pattern of wrong doing or the crime is severe but that's it. Are we really that weak of a country where the writing of the world stupid on someone's forehead is considered a serious act of wrongdoing alongside physical and sexual abuse? |

It's not just that writing the word stupid on someone's forehead is bad, it's the context of the situation as well that bothers me the most. As someone who wants to be a teacher myself, I feel strongly about this and want to see teachers held accountable for what they're doing in the classroom on all levels. I can only imagine what my own school would be like if teachers were monitored more closely and kept on a tight leash, some of the lazier teachers would definitely be a lot better at doing their jobs. |

Judging by how much government values education, I don't expect that to ever happen. This country is turning into a land of idiots and one day we will wake up and realize that the monkeys in the jungle have more sense then we do. Idiots make for great voters because they don't question anything and can be easily lead to supporting anyone even people who don't support the voters voting for them. I personally believe the government wants this nation to be full of idiots and what better way to do it then to put such teachers who don't have the sense to know that writing offensive words on a kid's forehead is wrong into our classrooms. |

Yeah, it's sad that things are pretty much to getting to the point where education is low on the totem pole for our government. You would think it would be top on the list, considering the students will be the ones running things in a few years (directly or indirectly), but nope, all the politicians can think about is themselves and their wallets. |

To answer GAK's question, if I was that student and if I was to get that from the teacher, I still wouldn't wish him to get fired. I wouldn't want to wish anyone to get fired, as their lives could crumble to the ground. I would let it slide and just wouldn't fuss about it. It's not a big deal. You gotta realize that people may try to hurt you or call you bad names just because you made a mistake, but you gotta learn to deal with it. It's life. There's nothing you can do about it. The kid should of just dealt with it and moved on. And if the teacher were to do that a second time, don't let him. You may get in trouble, but the teacher could get in trouble as well. |

You let it slide and it's just going to have more and more, and once the teacher realizes that students aren't reporting anything, he could easily move on to more extreme things and it could get really serious really quickly. It's not because of the actual act that I would report him and want him removed from the school, it's for the sake of other students and their safety. |

Safety? That word should be used when the teacher does something extreme. Like.....hitting a kid in class when they do something wrong. Then the word "Safety" can be used. This isn't about safety, its about abuse of power and corruption with the teacher. |

By a teacher abusing his power and being corrupt, as you put it, that isn't creating a very safe environment for the students and so safety does indeed play a role in this issue. Safety doesn't just involve physical harm, but also emotional and that's exactly what this is. I don't see what you're trying to say/prove by saying safety isn't an issue, when it clearly is an issue at all times in a classroom. |

I wanted to learn a bit more about the story so I Googled it, this local news website seemed to come up with the most information: http://www.newschannel5.com/story/16310071/teacher-suspended-for-writing-stupid-on-students-forehead The part in the middle when the Superintendent says the teacher looked 'remorseful' speaks to me quite a bit. This is what I meant when I said I couldn't pass judgement without know everything about the story. Clearly the teacher knows what he did was wrong and is sorry for it. Not only that, but it's his first year and he probably got caught up in things. I think the best angle to handle this at would be to dismiss the teacher (or allow him the chance to willfully resign) from the school but not leave any permanent marks on his record so that he could begin anew in a new school district. A stain like this will breed a lot of anger and contempt from parents and I think it'd be better for the teacher, the school, and the parents for the teacher to just leave the district and not return. |
