Outline BIRTHDAY!
H A P P Y . B I R T H D A Y

Happy Birthday!
I come to you with the biggest topic since this. Today we're not only celebrating this one day, but simultaneously honoring Outline's past and preparing for Outline's future as a forum. Today is the first of many big updates coming to Outline, and we'd like to walk you through some of the changes as well as provide you a bit of premature inside information as to what's being planned for Outline 2012.

New theme:
Everyone's favorite part!

This theme has been in development for months now, slowly maturing from its design stages to its fully-developed coded stage. I designed it to be a clean and professional theme, but yet still have a down-to-earth approachable kind of feel. I designed all of it and coded the big bones by myself, but it couldn't be what it is without DPM's assistance to help me achieve what I really wanted in it. He spent hours upon hours working with me to help make this in to a theme almost as extensive as Alphacide. I also thank Joe for his assistance in the hide codes on the Twitter feed and the sidemenu.
  • Features:
    • Twitter Feed - displays the latest tweet from our Twitter! (@OutlineZB). Complete with a toggle feature to hide it on command.
    • Collapsible/scrolling Sidemenu - This sidemenu scrolls down with you for easy access to important links, but it's also collapsible and allows the wrap to expand in to that space for smaller resolutions.
    • Custom Scrollbar - If you view in Chrome and Safari, you get to see a matching scrollbar! It's a bit slow-loading at times, so if you have a slow internet connection you may want to consider another theme or browser.
    • Buttons with a static, hover, and clicked effect!
    • New old emoticons - We've gone back to the classics with these emoticons, giving us more control over the faces in order to create many more! :r and :afro: are coming tomorrow.

  • Drawbacks:
Every theme has them, and we won't lie when we say this theme has them as well
    • Not for the faint of resolution - We did pretty good in securing resolution space, but for those oldschool really small monitors and probably smartphones, this theme isn't for you. However, read on to the plans for 2012...
    • A bit slow - We also tried to minimize image usage, but we did use quite a few. If your internet is deathly slow, I wouldn't recommend this theme.
    • Compatibility - We used quite a bit of CSS3, but we also tried to not use CSS3 on anything that would destroy the user experience, so it's mainly drop shadows and rounded corners. It shouldn't look too poor in IE.
    • Bugs here and there - We're aware of a few bugs that we're going to try to fix. One of those occurs when the sidemenu is collapsed and you scroll down slowly. Another is in IE where the sidemenu starts too far off the top of the screen.

New Token Features:

  • Buy an Outline redirect subdomain! (Ex: http://cody.outlineforum.com) - This subdomain can link to any place on the forum you want. You could have it link to your profile page, your favorite topic, or even your advertising topic. You can also have it named anything you want (Ex: anything.outlineforum.com) within reason. We only have 50 slots, so one per person and it will run as long as you can maintain it. Charges are placed on the last day of every month.
    • Initial Purchase
      • Member: 4,000 tokens
      • Silver: 3,000 tokens
      • Gold/Retired: 2,000 tokens
      Maintaining Domain (Cost per month)
      • Member: 500 tokens
      • Silver: 400 tokens
      • Gold: 300
      Changing name/link
      • All: 400 tokens

  • Buy an @outlineforum.com email to redirect to any email you want (Ex: an email to name@outlineforum.com can automatically go to your name@gmail.com inbox). We only have 100, so if they ever fill up I'll use activity parameters to decide who loses an email. I'll always contact you long before I take away your email and you'll get a partial refund so no one will ever lose their email randomly.
    • Initial Purchase
      • Member: 3,000 tokens
      • Silver: 2,000 tokens
      • Gold/Retired: 1,000 tokens
      Changing email name
      • All: 500 tokens

Layout changes:
  • Bye-bye IF themes - IF themes have been judged to be no longer worth their index space, so now you can access them through a link in the ZetaBoards Themes section. We do not officially support IF at Outline anymore, but you may still find help in the Support Section.
  • Hello, ZB Codes - ZetaBoards Codes now taken the index placement of IF Skins. We hope this will encourage more people to make and use codes and modifications.
  • Exhibit Section Alterations 'Theme & Code Display' has now become 'Web & UI Display'. This is generally just a name change, but you will now post anything to do with web, forum graphics, themes, UI designs, etc. in this section.
  • Tutorial Splitting - Tutorials have been split in to two different categories and placed as subforums to the exhibit forums for quick access when you're making something or you need help. Thanks to Flavius for this suggestion, it's taken a while to pull threw but we did do it.

  • Documentations Splitting - Like tutorials, Documentations have also been split up to be in the places they're typically needed: Web & UI showcase and forum discussion.

Outline 2012:

Let's take a look in to the future for a moment. I've made it a staff goal to make this year in to a year where we transform the very way you use Outline and ZetaBoards. We'll be pushing ZetaBoards to the very limits in coding from modifications to themes. We want to set the Apple-equivalent standard for ZetaBoards. Those are our goals for this year, and here are a few previews to some ideas we're brewing up:
  • Transform your posts - We'll be developing an automatic way for each user to customize their own posts. No, not just text, but the very CSS that encompasses your post. This will add an extreme value to tokens and gives users a way to do something they've never been able to do on ZetaBoards before.
  • Innovative and extreme themes - Have you ever wanted to do something just because you can? We'll be doing those ideas this year, even if there's little purpose to them sometimes other than to just prove it's possible. We'll prove that you can evolve the way a forum looks and feels without paying $50 a month for a license. After we get done playing in the coding sandbox, we'll take away what's weighing things down and set a new standard for every new theme to succumb to.
  • Updated Rules - Our rules are fun, but they don't really help you as a user know your limits. We'll be developing a new set of user-friendly rules to help everyone coexist smoother.

Now let's celebrate!

I have to say the new theme is pretty great. For me it looks a little too bright and I won't be using it, but it is definitely an amazing theme and you guys did a wonderful job with it. Onwards and upwards for Outline!

I'm very impressed with the theme, love the look of it. Definitely happy to have a brand new light theme to enjoy on here. :)

I'm also a fan of going back to the old looking emoticons, sometimes going back to the basics can be a blast.

Finally, happy fourth birthday to Outline! :D

PS: Can someone please put my name on the wall for me?

Awesome! The theme looks hot.
Consider this statement my permission to convert my themes to other platforms. Please link back to http://geoffreykoester.com. Be sure to rehost all theme images on the new platform as we do not know how long they will redirect. Also some boards hosting theme/skin images may not survive the move.

Putting all the sub-menu items in one drop down menu next to 'Inbox' was a fantastic idea. I hope to see this idea start circulating around to more designers.

Is there way to hide/collapse/remove the notice telling me resolution is too small? I am well aware of my resolution's failures and don't need to be reminded on every page. :P

It doesn't even look that bad on my resolution. The only thing that doesn't fit within the wrap is the ad box and I have ad removal enabled. xD

Yes, I noticed it right away (Cody also mentioned it in the first post). A very nice touch to this brilliant theme.

Ah, I see. Yeah, we'll definitely work on allowing you to be able to remove it. :)
