Public Transport vs. Driving

Envirospeak: Public Transport

Public transport often gets a bad rap because of various things, but increasingly it is becoming a more affordable and enjoyable option than driving a car.

As we all know, public transport is better for the environment than driving a car. On average, trains produce 35% fewer emissions than cars and just think of all the people being transported by those trains! Public transport reduces pollution. It also reduces the need for carparks that take up valuable land that could otherwise be used for buildings or crops. In one year, a train can reduce carbon emissions to the extent that planting 320 hectares of trees would. So the environmental benefits are obvious.

It is quite a common occurrence for an environmental issue to go unattended because people feel that benefiting the environment alone is not enough reason to make changes. A lot of people are more motivated by social or financial benefits. So in this case, though the environmental benefits are clear other benefits may not be.

But trains benefit people too. Trains encourage a sense of community among passengers. They allow you to be more productive than if you were in a car as you can do other activities such as read or knit. The risks associated with car accidents are reduced when taking public transport.

Public transport is much more affordable than running a car. Between expenses such as fuel, insurance, registration and maintenance a humble Toyota Camry costs approximately $220 a week to run. A Ford Territory can cost up to $253 a week and the popular Toyota Landcruiser can put you $418 out of pocket a week. They are huge expenses. A weekly ticket with V/Line, from Warragul to Melbourne, for a full-fare paying adult during peak periods costs $78 dollars and from Warragul to Traralgon costs only $51 for the week. That is significantly more affordable than running a car.

So next time you need to get from A to B, consider the opportunity to meet someone new on the train, to read that book you couldn’t put down the night before, to save yourself quite a few dollars and while you’re doing all that you are becoming part of a positive change for the environment.

So what do you make of this whole thing?
Do you prefer drive or catch public transport?
For what reasons?

I'll be honest, in my job (preholidays, which I finished a while ago) I started work too early to be able to catch a train there (I know...) however, when I got back from holidays most days I catch the train for a 9 o'clock start rather than drive for a 5 or 6 o'clock start. This saves me a bundle of cash, firstly.
But also, one major argument I have for wanting such a change was being able to devote my time to other things on the train (I may actually be able to start to read again!) and the fact that not having to focus on anything bar 'How far away is my stop?' is so much less taxing.

Oh, there's also the fact that the closest train to arrive near my workplace (timewise) is at 8AM on weekdays...Meaning, I'm forced to grab a coffee. Hard life, eh? :P

Honestly, public transportation is quite good over here. Though if you look at punctuality, buses are better than trains because trains usually get a delay of 15-30 minutes and if you only have 1 train in an hour, it gets quite upsetting.

When I went to school last year I took the train all day to get to the city and then the tram to get to the school. I enjoyed using the train but most students really don't like going by train. I didn't see why.

At the moment though, I drive my car to work because a) train is useless since it's in the same city b) there's no near bus stop and c) I don't have a bike. I'd say if I would have a bike, I'd use it to go to work but I'd be lying. It maybe is a 15 minute ride but I'm just too lazy.

So I don't really have a bad experience with public transportation and there are a lot of people who go to work by train because it's just easier. For example my stepfather. Goes to work by train all his life because he works in the capital city and the traffic jams around there are horrible. It does require him to get up quite early to have a seat on the train but in return, he gets to leave work early. (y)

If I need to, I'll use the bus. But I don't, very often.

Honestly, if I can avoid using public transportation I do. Buses make me very nervous and aren't all that reliable. I use a car to get to and from school, but since I don't drive myself I typically walk for everything else. Both of my jobs and the gym that I use are about a 20-30 minute walk from my apartment, which isn't too bad. It's good exercise and completely environmentally-friendly. The only real downside to walking is the time it takes. It's a five minute drive to either of my jobs, but a thirty minute walk and so travel time always has to be taken into account when I'm planning out my day. I plan on driving and getting a car as soon as I can, but even when I do have my own transportation, I plan on walking the majority of the time, as long as I'm not in a hurry. It'll just be nice to have the option.

My family doesn't own a car, so I always use public transportation to get to certain places. Here in the Bay Area, we have a good public transportation system. I usually either walk or take the bus to get where I want to. Where I live, it's easy to just take a train to San Francisco, which is usually pretty reliable. I rarely take the BART, though, which is our region's part rapid transit/part commuter rail system, since it doesn't pass through where I live.

I'm with you, except I'd go a step further and say I can't imagine life without my own car.

I kind of enjoy taking public transit, specifically the BART or Caltrain.

People make me really nervous, so taking the bus alone is out of the question. I don't mind it so much if someone is with me.

My town is small enough where one isn't necessary. :]
I mean, for stuff in your town yes it's doable but like going to the beach, the movies, out for dinner, etc etc etc... I mean it'd be one boring life if I had to stay in this town. (n) I love going to other places. :D And some places you just can't go to without the train or bus. :)

When going to the beach, we always go by car. We could go by train but it's a hassle. We take our bathing suits, other clothes, towels, food, drinks, etc etc and it's just easier to put it all in the car and drive there than to take it all with you on the train and be a burden to some people on that train. :)

However, I recently went to the zoo and then we did go by train. Why? Because the zoo is right next to the train station in Antwerp and it's the easiest way to get there. If it actually is easier to go by train, I will. But most of the times, it's not.

Oh no, I agree. Anything worth doing is out of walking distance for me. Just work and the gym are reachable pretty much. I need David to drive me if we want to go to the movies or the zoo or anything.

I walk sometimes, but I use the car mostly. Buses make me nervous and I don't feel comfortable on them. I've had a bad experience on one.

I have never had a bad experience on the bus before. But I don't really use the bus.
I did have someone who kind of stalked me, on the train but then I avoided we took the same train or I just hide and jump on the other side of the train so he didn't see me. (y) It was creepy though.

the transport connections around my village are terrible. places are close enough to walk to because it's a small place, but if you want to leave and go to another village or into the City, a train is your only option. i've used trains a couple of times to go long distance to London and that was fine. clean, reliable and great service :) i've never used a bus or taxi though, or just a regular train. i couldn't live without my car...

We don't even have taxi service around here. Only in the big cities like Antwerp or Bruges or Brussels.
Well there is only 1 in my town and I did use it once but it was becauuuuuse... It was my friend's bachelorette party and it snowed the day before so it was all icey and stuff. I had a deal with my mom she'd take me but she's scared driving in those conditions and my dad was working at the time so I took the taxi. I only took the taxi because he happened to be a neighbour. XD
