In my Human Sexuality class today we were discussing sex education in schools. When asked, many of the students in my class (and there were some 200) responded that while in school they were taught only to abstain from sex until marriage. This is the popular form of sexual education in the United States, and as a result much of the youth is uninformed when it comes to sexual matters. These are four videos that we watched during class today. Each portrays an actual lesson that has been taught to children throughout the country, millions of them, regarding sex and abstinence. They are meant to be funny, so it's okay to laugh, but after the joke is over it's kind of horrifying to realize that this is actually being taught in schools. Not only are the ideas harmful, but they offer no real information regarding sex. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=IoIeXgCfwNI http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=jmwJvgKTTjw http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Jk_kiNZJYfY http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Ry42ZL3c0Z0 What are your thoughts? Do you think that abstinence-only lessons are an appropriate method of teaching sex education? If not, how much information should students be given? |

This is the curriculum in some schools. It's not the national standard. |

At my high school they were very serious on this matter. They actually taught us how to be safe. They didn't just say, "Do not have sex." Of course, a handful of students may abstain from sex until marriage but the reality is that most of them had already had sex or would have it in the very near future. It isn't enough to blow off the issue, they need to actually start teaching kids to be safe in every school. |

I couldn't agree more. If my school focused more on proper contraceptive use rather than attempting to scare students out of having sex by shoving STD pictures in our faces, perhaps it wouldn't have such a high rate of pregnancy. My high school that is. |

Abstinence only education is messed up. First of all, and this should be obvious, if all you're doing is saying "don't have sex" and the reasons why, why do you need a class for that? Pretty sure one assembly one get the job done. I'm sure if you're going to practice abstinence, you could make that decision from that just as you would from a class. And as Stacha said, if schools actually taught safe sex and stuff, maybe we wouldn't have so many high school (or middle school) pregnancies. Not saying there wouldn't be any at all, but some of those kids that are having sex may not have ever heard about doing it safely (depending on their family situation). My school wasn't really abstinence only, but it didn't really teach safe sex either. Honestly, it was a crappy class. Easy A, by all means, but it was just a 2 week section in our regular health class. Enough to have to have parental permission slips signed, but we mostly learned about the biology of both genders. Not many useful practices/tips, that I can recall. |

In The Netherlands, most pupils only receive a bit of sex ed around the age of 12. Rather than telling you when it's socially accepted to have sex, the teachers went more into detail on what the risks are and how to prevent them. Abstaining from sex until marriage is kind of an ancient view and definitely not true (at least around here) where most people lose their virginity at 14-18. There aren't many teen pregnancies though, for some reason it sticks with people that safe sex is important. |

The only education we received in primary school was education on puberty. They separated the girls and the boys and guest speakers spoke to each group. I assume that the boys were spoken to about their first spermarche; we were taught about periods and what to expect and how to use a tampon or a pad when we began ours. Nothing about sex itself, just pubertal changes. In high school, as I said, we were more or less shown pictures of STD infected genitals, in what I assume was an attempt to scare us off of sex. We were told about condoms, but what was most emphasized was the idea that condoms break easily and then we were given all sorts of pregnancy statistics. The birth control pill, hormonal implants, and shots were absolutely never discussed. I learned about the pill on my own, but the first time I heard about any other method was when I went to see my doctor about birth control methods. This, to me, indicates that I was severely undereducated about sex even though I had felt at the time that I was getting a lot of information. It was certainly more complete than the information given in the videos that I posted, and that concerns me because that means that there are many who are less educated on the subject than I was. What I would really like to see is a class like my human sexuality class taught in high school at the senior or junior level. The course is extensive and covers everything from contraceptive to abortion to GLBT relationships to biological changes and virtually everything else that can be squeezed into one semester. Rather than simply saying don't have sex it suggests that if you want to abstain until marriage, that's great. But it's not horrible to choose not to abstain either. I do think that sex education needs to start at home, and I have every intention of sitting down with my kids as they near or enter puberty and having a very thorough version of "the talk", no matter how uncomfortable it is. But I also think that they should receive more and complete information in a school setting too. It's something I'm certainly going to inquire about before I enroll my children in a school. |
