are too damn high. Seriously. My fall books this past semester for less than $90. Over $300 for my books this coming semester, same amount. For those of you in college, have you experience a similar price hike? I'm curious if this is a trend overall or just my bad luck. |

It's disgusting. Genuinely disgusting. I understand that a lot of work goes into these textbooks, I truly do. But students, at least in the United States, spend between $10,000 and $60,000 per year to go to school. Spending another $500-$600 on textbooks for a single semester is absolutely outrageous. |

I always found it humorous that the US is always talking about how it has to get back into the game so it's not so behind on education in the world, yet they just keep making it more and more expensive for people, causing even more people to not be able to attend college. |

Preach brotha. Even textbooks in lower education, like high school and middle school, aren't all that cheap. They're nothing college prices, but textbook rentals were around the $100 mark each year. There's aid for that for low income families, but the point is, if you want to improve education, don't be so greedy and make it more affordable for everyone. |

Unfortunately I don't think we'll be seeing a reduction in the price of college any time soon. This country runs on the belief that the more they make people pay, the better. If only they realized that the cheaper the made college, the more money they would get in return. |

The issue is that education, in this country at least, is treated like a business rather than just education. No one should ever be prevented by economic status if they actively want to learn and expand their knowledge and skills. |

Last semester...for just books I only payed like $100. Not sure what it's going to be this next semester though....I'm hoping not that much though. Do you do book rentals or do you buy them? At my school, the bookstore rents books, dramatically dropping the price....which is so nice lol. |

In the uk during the the compulsory education you dont have to buy books as the school provide them. They are used for all classes so they aren't always well looked after but they are made to last and every year or so when they are updated the school get new ones. Optional education is different I can say for 6th form the courses I did they were provided but some of them weren't and also for a course I want to do in journalism you have to buy the books for it they cost about £100 all together so its not so bad compared to the US by the sounds of it. |

We have the option of renting, but I usually buy them all (used, of course). Used prices aren't much more expensive here than their rent price and I'd much rather have the option of keeping the book if necessary. A lot of my major classes later on will use the same books I'm using now. |

My Spanish textbooks come with an online code thing for online work and it's ridiculous - that code alone is almost another 100...I have two books for the class and thankfully we use the same ones for the spring but still. And for renting a used textbook next semester it's going to cost 52..... |

I hate those codes. Can't buy a used book because you need a new code, and every time I've had to buy a code, the professor doesn't use it and just says it's for extra studying. Any future codes that I "need" won't be bought till after I've been to the class. And of course, it's harder to resell your used book because everyone else needs the code too and you can't sell that part.

I would compare all of the prices, but it was usually cheaper to buy them used off of Amazon than it was to rent them. Those codes are so awful and such an absolute scam. I appreciated the odd teacher who would pick their texts keeping cost in mind and assign the least expensive one they could. |

I always buy the edition before. If it's history, it barely changed. If it's business, I'm sure that barely changed too. If not, I try to gauge within the first week or two "can I survive this class without buying the book". Plus most of my instructors are aware of how gut-wrenching expensive books have become. My freshman year of books were expensive, plus I was dumb and naive and didn't learn the good tricks until later. Plus, ask your instructor if a previous edition is okay. I remember my business instructor talk to another business professor about how it's outrageous he needs to use the most recent edition of a textbook while 1% of it changes. tl;dr buy used buy the edition before determine if you actually need the book share book with trusted friend I personally don't rent out books as I'll buy a used book, sell it back for 10 bucks less at the end of the semester and its still cheaper than renting it. I use Amazon ![]() Plus, depending on your school/instructor, sometimes there is a book on reserve. |

So because I take business classes, I have the standard textbooks and it usually ends up being $200-$300. But now because I wanna double major in Visual Arts as well....... Just spent about $300 on art supplies not including gouache, which will probs be like another $30-40. And then my business classes ended up being around $200 this semester.

Ahh books are ridiculous. Thankfully my roommate took one of the classes I'm taking this semester last semester and is letting me use her textbook. And one class isn't using a textbook. The one I actually had to buy wasn't too bad and I'm renting the other three. Though I'm really putting off renting the one for my online class because even to rent it it's over $100 sigh School sucks bros |

I remember this all too well and painfully. I think the highest amount I spent on textbooks in one semester was close to $600 through the on campus bookstore. I think I made close to $200 back when I sold them back to the same store at the end of the year. |
