 As far as I know, the best image software is PhotoShop CS3. I'm not too familiar with PS6. ;)

 My first photo-editing program was PS6 I believe. Harder to use, old interface I believe.

 The newer Photoshops are better to use than the old ones. I think Photoshop 7+ are the best to use.

 GIMP isn't that good... too hard to do much

Aviary is a good one and it's free.

CS3 isn't all it's cracked up to be, I can do better in CS2

MY version of PS 7.0, which I wish to god I still had :(, had over 250 updates/upgrades and was superior to CS3 :P

I'd say use CS2...

 Don't discuss that any further here, however.

CS3 is now the program I'm using purely because 7 was discontinued on OSX. CS3 is better, more ergonomic, when you get used to it though. I'd not go back to 7 now.

If you're considering buying however, don't. CS4 is just about to be released.

 Photoshop 7 is so much better than CS3 IMHO . I've always been more comfortable with it than CS3.

 CS3 is only good if for usability. Like... user friendly.

If you know what you are doing you can make 10x better GFX in any of the other versions
